Professor Walther Schaumann, the initiator of the Carnic peace path, had an idea. After he had completed the necessary refuge on the trail, the New Porzehütte, he found an ideal place for a small shelter cabin between Obstanserseehütte and Porzehütte in the charming Filmoor.
The section Austria of the Austrian Alpine Association guaranteed the financing, and in a well memorized meeting on Shrove Tuesday 1976 in Haspinger barracks in Lienz Walther Schaumann was able to infect the commanding officer Richard Pettauer with his enthusiasm.
In the next two summers, a fine little hut with lounge, cooking area and a few sleeping booths have been build by the “Dolomite Friends” and soldiers of the Hunter Bateillons 24. The construction led Walther Schaumann. To remember the outstanding efforts of the East Tyrolean “Standschützen” in the first days of World War I, the name "Filmoor-Standschützen-Hut" has been given to the refuge.

A huge crowd participated at the opening ceremony in August 1977 and they were all excited about the new shelter on the Carnic ridge, which contributed to the attractiveness of the trail.
In 1990 the section Austria built a small sleeping cabin , again wi2the  help of Jägerbateillons 24”, and in 2000 the refuge has been renovated completely and extended by a sanitary tract.
Finally, in 2007 a generously sized dormitory cabin was built with a basement in place of the old shelter. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant has been added.

In 2014 dining room and the kitchen have been modernized without destroying the charm of the small hut. By expanding the it was able to add staff rooms, and a solar system for hot water.
The Filmoorhütte has been awarded the Austrian Eco-Label.
